SIPO continues investigation into former minister Robert Troy's declaration errors

The Ditch revealed in 2022 that Troy had failed to declare his business and housing interests to the Oireachtas in full.

THE WATCHDOG RESPONSIBLE with upholding public standards of politicians is pressing on with its investigation into former junior enterprise minister Robert Troy, after the initial hearings phase has concluded.

Troy resigned from his Minister of State position after it was found by investigative journalism platform ‘The Ditch’ that he had failed to declare, in full, his property and business interests between 2020 and 2022.

Before resigning from his ministerial position, the sitting Fianna Fáil TD for Longford-Westmeath corrected the register and the initial hearings process began within the Standards In Public Office Commission (SIPO).

SIPO today found there was no prima facie evidence – or at first sight evidence – to support the suggestion that there was a conflict of interest relating to his public statements, Troy claimed today.

However despite that, SIPO are choosing to move forward with a full investigation, under section 23 of the Ethics in Public Office Act 1995.

The move was noted by Troy in a statement today, where he said: “I have already acknowledged that I made an error in this regard based on a flawed interpretation of the legislation pertaining.

“I look forward to cooperating fully and am hopeful that the Commission will conclude its investigation in a timely manner,” he added.

Troy said he will make no further comments on the matter. SIPO has been contacted The Journal for a comment.

This job plan will be forgotten in 1 year time and the unemployment rate will be pretty much the same. To sell smoke at long term is a very typical strategy from politicians across Europe.

100000 jobs over 4 years where and even if there is no increase in unemployment it will still leave 350000 unemployed.

If this government was serious about creating jobs they would tear up their last (anti-growth) budget and start again with a budget that favoured growth in the real economy rather than protecting the interests of the public sector & bank bondholders.

Last week: TheJournal Commenters complain that the government isn’t doing enough for the unemployed to get them back into work.

This week: The government does something for the unemployed and commenters still aren’t happy.

As per usual everything the government does is wrong, yet if they don’t do anything that’s wrong too! Best thing is that none of ye have seen the plan yet and still are complaining about it. Forest of whinge comment from last week springs to mind!

100000 is a low ambition target. Half that amount will be lost due to closures during the same period. I would like to see Richard Bruton and co challenging themselves to set the target much higher. It is better to set high targets that may not be achieved rather than lower ones that have a good chance of being met.
